What Is Pocket Prep?

I've ran a CSCS Study Group for the past 5 years, and one resource has consistently popped up over and over again: Pocket Prep.

Pocket Prep is an app tailored to practice questions for certification exams including fitness certifications like the NSCA CSCS. For CSCS prep, it provides around 1,500 practice questions. They are generally kept up to date and aligned with the official exam outline and include explanations and references to source material.

The app includes various study modes such as Question of the Day, Quick 10, Level Up, Weakest Subject, Missed Questions, Timed, Build Your Own, and Mock Exam along with performance analytics and streak tracking.

Pocket Prep is updated regularly and the app user interface is easy to use.

Although there are some free questions available, for full access, pricing tiers currently range from one-month for $21 to annual for around $125. Most students I've seen keep it for a few months while studying then cancel.

Pros of Using Pocket Prep for CSCS Prep

1. Convenience & Portability

Pocket Prep enables quick, on-the-go studying with short quizzes like “Question of the Day” or “Quick 10” that fit busy schedules. A lot of students use it to study during quick breaks throughout their day.

2. Large Bank of Questions

The platform offers roughly 1,500 questions. This is a great value, though students often report the questions lack the detail that can be found in other study resources.

3. Detailed Explanations & References

Most questions include a full breakdown of correct answers, often linked to textbook references for follow-up study. This is a great way to learn from your mistakes.

4. Insightful Performance Analytics

You can track progress at the subject/domain level, zeroing in on weak spots.

What Could Be Improved (Cons)

1. Mostly Recall-Based Questions

While helpful for memory reinforcement, many users and experts caution that Pocket Prep's questions are more fact-recall oriented, whereas the CSCS exam demands deeper applied understanding and analysis.

Students have said:

“Pocket prep (not nearly as difficult as the CSCS… helpful to treat as ‘flashcards.’”

"Memory/recall type questions whereas the actual CSCS exam requires a much deeper working knowledge.”

2. Not Sufficient as a Standalone Resource

This should be a supplement, not the core of your prep. Make sure to get the NSCA’s official textbook (Essentials of Strength and Conditioning).

3. Possible Overconfidence Trap

Pocket Prep might give users a false sense of preparedness. Performance on the app may exceed performance on the actual exam by around 8–15%.

Final Take and Study Strategy

Pocket Prep is an excellent supplementary tool but not the cornerstone of CSCS prep.

Recommended Strategy:

  1. Start with the NSCA Official Resources:

    • Read the Essentials of Strength and Conditioning

  2. Consider additional study resources:
  3. Use Pocket Prep Strategically:

    • Leverage Pocket Prep to reinforce memorization and track weak areas.

    • Study on the go when you don't have time to sit down for a full hour with the book or study videos.
    • Incorporate quiz modes depending on your schedule (e.g., Quick 10 for breaks, Weakest Subject to target gaps).

Final Recommendations

  • Use Pocket Prep as a dynamic, flexible supplement to your core CSCS prep, not your primary study tool.

  • Focus first on content from the Essentials textbook.
